Bharat Patel has been working for the rights of the fishermen community of Kutch for the past 10 years. The community was burdened by debt when Bharatbhai first met them in 2002. He got rid of the middlemen and introduced direct marketing. Bharatbhai then took on the big industrialists, organizing protests against the construction of port projects on the coastline that was threatening to take over the livelihood and land of the fishermen.
